Digitization of the Fritsch Collection Illustrations

In 2013 we have checked and digitized all the sheets in the Fritsch Collection of Algal Illustrations for just one diatom genus and some related genera into which species have been moved or from which they have been removed.
The sheets include entries of material that have come to the Collection originally as reprints to Professor Fritsch and then through the Freshwater Biological Association, so we cannot claim to include all the named species or all illusrations. We do however include a a few references that are not in the Index Nominum Algarum, which is such a wonderful online resource.
Our first priority was to create a list of the speies names with the correct authorities and create a spreadsheet with the essential information, and state whether the type illustration and/or diagnosis is present. No attempt has been made to list the number of entries on the sheets which vary from one to more than thirty and include named varieties and forms.

*Neofragilaria of Williams & Round 1987 has been renamed Fragilariforma
Neofragilaria of Desikachary et al is an earlier marine genus

Over time many species have been moved to other genera as new combinations , which is indicated by the placing of brackets around the original author, or as new names if the comination is already in use. The need for correct taxonomic information should be obvious since at least one genus name in this list* has been used for two different diatom species. With the current studies of older type material,  the use of electron microscopy and genetic sequencing, many changes are being made.
The digital photographs of each Fritsch sheet are named and numbered, and there are some that include text copied in by Fritsch as overlays (below) or with material added on the reverse.

There may be errors on sheets as the information is copied from the first author entry not the original authority.
